Welcome to Ask April, a no-nonsense advice column focusing on what it is you can do to correct things that need correcting. While we all know much in life is out of our control, and sometimes, our reaction is all we CAN control- we really do have a lot of personal power, thankfully. Our will is just as important as the wills of others around us, and while we need to be considerate, we also need to make sure others are equally considerate of us. It is my hope that when you write in to me, asking advice, that I can help you make a good decision that somehow improves whatever situation you’ve found yourself in. As with anything I share, I recommend people don’t automatically take my word for anything, but include my advice in with the rest of the things that help them make a decision. I wish you well. Read on.
Every other week, I answer a call for advice, and every other week, I share my views on something I observed- I call this Observational Wisdom.
It’s been an interesting week, to say the least, with the beginning of Trump Dynasty, episode Whitehouse. I’ve had to clear my Facebook wall, and avoid conversations with strangers online. I, like so many other Americans , am terrified, and disgusted at the state of our Nation, the behaviors of man so-called human beings, and each day, I feel worse.
I voted. I had discussions with people for months, trying to reason with them a Liberal candidate was one who would watch out for the needs of both the marginalized, and the privileged, as opposed to a rich, bigoted, hostile, out of touch hothead whose purpose for being President was to gain more power. I was attacked, made fun of, and belittled every time I tried to speak with said hothead’s supporters.
I have completely lost faith in our capacity , as a species to be compassionate, and care about the needs of others.
Survival of the fittest IS the rule of the species, and the fittest are the least intelligent, who fight the hardest to gain control.
In this country, that translates as rich, Conservative, fundamentalist Xtian, white males.
They hate me for all that I am and all I stand for. The feeling is mutual. Even members of my own family feel the same way about my beliefs, and I cannot have an open dialogue without being shouted down. My rights as a female, as a bisexual, as a non Xtian, as somebody who has an impairment, and as a member of the non-rich working class is looked down upon by the Potus himself, and his followers are energized, and on the warpath to try and “convert” me.
I have been spit at and told I would never work with a Republican. Sure I will. The ones not trying to abolish abortion- and you can bet birth control will come next- the ones not trying to make everything about THEIR religion, and against every other one- the ones who are for minority rights- the ones who make laws and decisions reflective of the needs of the Nation’s plethora of people, not just the ones they prefer. I’m not seeing a whole lot of that from the Republican party right now. What I am seeing them do is work towards an American Xtian theocracy, and you are damn right I am not working with them to make that happen. When they start working towards things I feel beneficial, then I will support them. Until then, I won’t. Hate me for that if you will.
I’m out of the everything closet, but I don’t want to have shouting matches with people who find it exhilarating, while it exhausts me. It’s not raising awareness, and it’s not opening minds. It’s making people who love a fight happy, and it’s made me distrust humanity in general even more.
We have been lulled into a false sense that humanity has evolved and moved towards enlightenment and embracing diversity. This is because for almost a decade, we had a President who does. He cared enough about those who are marginalized to create both an atmosphere of respect, but to encourage lawmakers to well…make laws that reflected it.
Our new leader is pro those like him, and anti everybody else, however.
Rather than fight online all day, there is work to be done.
The protests and marches MUST continue, but with no other action, they are more of an annoyance than anything. It seems like we are standing outside where men are making laws, and begging them to make laws that benefit humanity. They can CONSIDER what we ask of them, but they don’t HAVE to do the people’s work.
I am convinced the voting was rigged to get a majority of Republicans in office, and I’m convinced the Potus could not have won on his own. His immediate bad approval ratings show the people are unhappy. He is doing what he said he would do all along, so how are all these people suddenly unhappy if the majority willed him in office?
For a change, I am at a loss as to what can be done. All I know is voting and making our voices heard is not enough. There is going to be a Revolution. I am not calling for guillotines in the streets or bombings. I am not calling for anything, but something is brewing, something will happen, and it’s not going to be good.
We are a Nation at war, and the battlefielf is on the streets and in the personal lives of the citizens. We hate one another, and it keeps us occupied enough to keep us out of the new government’s way. They designed this, and we are so stupid, we are playing along.
We are stating in the boxes they want us in. The most out of hand protesters have gotten is to block traffic. That’s it. We are behaving.
Eventually, somebody is going to snap. Somebody who loses their insurance, or gets tired of the racial slurs. Somebody who is sick of being kept poor. Somebody who is tired of the banning of a whole religion. Somebody who is tired of male lawmakers demanding women either be baby factories or celibate. Somebody tired of being told that being NOT STRAIGHT is of the devil and forbidden. Somebody tired of having intolerant religion crammed down their throat. Somebody tired of being hated, put down, and refusing to allow their very existence to become illegal.
This is the 21st century.
We have been fighting too hard for too long to allow everything we have worked for to be taken overnight because of the powerful’s hatred.
I cannot love the people trying to destroy me. I know I cannot reason with them or change their hearts.
I also know attacking them, and hating them with equal force they hate me is no answer unless I destroy them.
I thought the capacity to completely trample and dominate the marginalized was defeated in America, but it’s not.
The destruction of the policies and capacity to marginalize us is what has to be destroyed. Life is not like the hero cartoons where the good guys win all the time. Life is a constant struggle for survival and freedom. You win one battle, and you wake up the next day to fight another.
Today, we are losing, but we are not defeated.
I don’t know what comes next, but we are not done.
